One voice: Parisi, AI and a single way of thinking
In an interview with La Stampa, Giorgio Parisi, Nobel laureate in Physics 2021, is asked whether artificial intelligence will help with the climate emergency. He says it might, with better solar cells and new batteries. Then he names a danger:
«Che l’Ai venga trasformata in una forma di controllo per stabilire un pensiero unico, dal quale non è più possibile discostarsi.»
That AI is turned into a form of control to impose a single way of thinking, one you can no longer depart from.
It would happen, he explains, if everyone asked a single AI provider for news and information:
«Accadrebbe quando tutti si rivolgessero a una singola agenzia di Ai per avere notizie e informazioni. Bisogna, quindi, creare leggi antimonopolio a livello globale, così come l’Italia ha fatto in passato nel campo dell’informazione»
It would happen if everyone turned to a single AI provider for news and information. So we need antitrust laws at a global level, as Italy did in the past for the press.
A model speaks with one voice. Whoever chose the data and wrote the rules decides what that voice says, and if the model is closed, nobody outside can check those choices. This is why, besides antitrust laws, Parisi asks for public research on AI that releases open code and applications.
European and Italian institutions are responsible for guaranteeing pluralism and safeguards on answers when AI is involved too, as they already do for the press.
In our small way, with ParliamentRAG we work to make these guarantees hold in the answers AI models give about the Italian Parliament and institutions. An answer has to give a voice to every group, quote the people who actually worked on the topic, and report their exact words with a link to the official record. The data and the verification method are open, so anyone can run the check again at www.parliamentrag.it/verifica.
